The service will begin with the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Color Guard presentation of the colors. This year, there will be a special presentation on the story of the Four Chaplains: Rev. George L. Fox (Methodist), Dr. Alexaner Goode (Jewish), Rev. Clark V. Poling (Reformed, Dutch) and Fr. John P. Washington (Catholic).
On Feb. 3, 1943, a torpedo launched from a submarine struck the ship Dorchester’s engine room. Though panic spread throughout the ship, these four men — all chaplains — helped evacuate crew members while sacrificing themselves, going down with the boat, arms linked and in prayer. Of the 904 men on board, 209 survived.
The HRCGOP will place a floral spray to honor the lives of the men and women in military service that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and the American way of life. Please consider taking a little time out of your weekend to honor the fallen from our community.
